Many of these earliest blooming perennials on the prairies are truly hardy, long-lived and lovely. Their flowers are sometimes fleeting, but they are all the more welcome as harbingers of spring after a long cold winter. However, they may be scarce at garden centres. It is well worth the effort to hone one’s nagging skills with local retailers or scour the internet for mail order sources. Once these perennials are in your garden, you won’t be disappointed.
